About Indianapolis, IN
Indianapolis, or “Indy” as it is commonly known, is the capital and largest city in Indiana as well as the 17th most populous city in the nation. The name Indianapolis means “Indian City” owing to the long habitation in the area by indigienous tribes. The city was incorporated in 1847 in central Indiana on the edge of the White River.
The city and the surrounding area leads the central midwest in a variety of economic areas. Transportation, health care, auto sports, and property management industries are well represented and a number of Fortune 500 and 1000 corporations make the area their headquarters.
The city and nearby suburbs are recognized as a leading example of “City Beautiful” design with grand public spaces and thoughtful consideration put into housing and transportation. Campuses of IUPUI and Butler University are found in the city along with many religious and private colleges.
Indianapolis is known as the “Auto Sports Capital of the World” due in part to the Indianapolis 500 and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The “Indy 500” is the largest one day sporting event in the world. The city is also home to the NFL Indianapolis Colts and the NBA Indiana Pacers and plays host to a variety of collegiate and professional championships each year.
The four season climate of Indianapolis lends itself to a variety of outdoor activities with moderate temperatures throughout most of the year. Spring and summer rains are normal and winter does include snowfall and freezing temperatures.
Cultural amenities of the city include world class museums and public areas, the renowned Indianapolis Zoo and Children’s Museum, as well as the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum. A Cultural Trail and numerous greenways connect many of the cultural attractions in the city.
While it has been known as the “Chain Restaurant Capital of America” in the past, Indianapolis is now home to some of the finest restaurants in the nation. A thriving local agriculture, craft brewing and artisan food industry has risen in the past decade or more to support the interest in quality food and beverages.
Indianapolis remains as it started, a highly diverse, well designed metropolitan area with many amenities, industries, and communities playing important roles in its continuing livelihood and supporting quality of life.
