Micro-Mesh

Smaller openings are not automatically better. A very fine mesh stops more of the smallest material, but pollen and fine sediment can build up into a film on top that needs occasional brushing. How Micro-Mesh Gutter Guards Work
A micro-mesh guard sits over the top of the gutter, usually tucked under the first row of shingles or fastened to the gutter lip. Water runs off the roof, crosses the mesh and drops through the openings into the gutter. Leaves, needles and seed pods are too large to pass, so they collect on top and are carried off by wind and rain.
What "Micro" Means
There is no official definition. Mesh is usually described by its mesh count (the number of wires per linear inch) and by the size of each opening, measured in microns (1,000 microns = 1 millimeter). Products sold as micro-mesh range from roughly 250 microns to about 1 millimeter. A higher mesh count with thinner wire gives smaller openings.
What It Keeps Out, and What Gets Through
Any micro-mesh keeps out leaves, pine needles, seed pods, catkins, twigs and other larger debris. The smallest material, such as pollen, fine shingle grit and dust, behaves differently depending on opening size: on finer meshes it tends to collect on the surface, and on coarser meshes it washes through into the gutter.
The Tradeoff: Finer vs. Larger Openings
Finer openings stop more fine material from entering the gutter, but that material can mat over the top of the mesh, especially during heavy pollen seasons, and slow how fast water gets in. Larger openings keep the surface clearer because fine material passes through, but that material then settles in the gutter and is removed during routine cleaning. Neither choice is maintenance-free.
Maintenance
No gutter guard eliminates maintenance. Expect to brush or rinse the surface of a mesh guard occasionally and to have the gutters underneath checked and cleaned out from time to time, especially under heavy tree cover.
What to Compare
When comparing mesh gutter guards, look at the opening size, the wire thickness and how rigid the mesh is, the material (stainless steel resists corrosion better than aluminum mesh), how the frame attaches to the roof and gutter, and the written warranty terms. These tell you more than whether a product is called micro-mesh.
